Ryan's Hobby Hangout Legions Imperialis, Kill Team, Warcry May 2024
Hey there, Battle Foam fans, my name’s Ryan and I’ve been a miniatures/wargaming nerd since I was 12 years old. One of my many roles here at Battle Foam is building all the new releases from Games Workshop, Asmodee and many other gaming companies so we can create miniature storage. Every week I’m building some new release, and thought I’d add my two cents out into the community. Here I’d like to highlight some of my favorite aspects of building, maybe some things that grind my gears as well as some hobby tips for building each release.
This week we’re building some more products from Games Workshop. This time it’s a few Legions Imperialis releases as well as the new 40k Kill Team Nightmare, and Warcry Pyre and Flood Sets. Personally, as a devoted worshiper of Chaos, I’m glad to see the Night Lords getting some love, even if they would never return the favor.
Speaking of the Night Lords, the miniatures were superb. Whenever GW has these Kill Teams with Chaos Space Marines where they add an upgrade sprue in the box for some themed marines, you know you’re in for a treat. For instance, a while back, they did a similar thing for Word Bearers. It’s always super cool to see how they mix the previous Chaos Space Marine kits that came out a few years ago and add some new stuff to it to make whole new models.
Not many pitfalls to go over this week. Thankfully everything was smooth sailing. Though, I will say, when it comes to the Legions Imperialis Astartes Drop Pods, I might recommend glueing your Pod Panels. Maybe some closed, and some are open to give variety. It’s cool that they are designed just like their larger counterparts, but for the most part it seems unnecessary. It is kind of a hassle to manipulate, as sometimes not all the doors will open which you will need to pry, but the panels are so small you can’t get any grip on it. I’d say just avoid the headache and glue some closed, some open, or maybe half and half.
The new Kill Team and Warcry seem a little odd to me. In the past, there were two teams of around 10 models each and a whole host of terrain for around $200, maybe $250. Now, in Nightmare and Pyre and Flood, you have your two teams, and just one large, simple terrain piece for around $130-140. Not sure if Games Workshop just assumes you have terrain from previous sets, but the scale back is interesting. It feels previous boxes had more value, but this might allude to their current production changes rather than something sinister.
That’s it this time around! Come by next week for some more GW release discussion, and possibly some Atomic Mass Games stuff??? We’ll see what comes in…
